DIY Beaded Bobby Pins

DIY Beaded Bobby Pins

I have pretty unmanageable thick and wavy hair, so in the summertime it is up like 99% of the time. And after a while I get really bored of just a ponytail or a messy bun and I mix it up, I add a fun braid or some sort of decoration. Well earlier this summer when we went to visit my parents I found some old hair stuff and jewelry of mine stashed away and I found an old beaded bobby pin from when I was younger. Well I thought how much fun would it be to make some for myself now and I can throw them in my inevitably messy up do’s! They are really simple to make and whether you want them for yourself or your little girl, you can totally customize them by choosing your favorite colors and patterns! They take minimal supplies and chances are if you are a female you already have a ton of bobby pins sitting around your house (or maybe you don’t, how do they always seem to disappear so quickly?!). I got an assortment of glass beads and floral wire from Michael’s and was ready to make these cute hair pins!

Instructions

Choose the beads you want for your bobby pin, I recommend grouping your beads in groups of 3 when you put them on to the wire, depending on the size of your beads you will want between 10-18 beads. Also keep in mind that the beads can’t be so little that 2 pieces of wire won’t go through them.

DIY Beaded Bobby Pin - Start

Once you have your beads picked out start by cutting a piece of wire 10-12 inches long with your wire cutter / nail clippers (you don’t need that much but i found its easier to work with if you give yourself a little extra wire). Bend wire in half and slip onto bobby pin.

DIY Beaded Bobby Pin - step 1

Slide first grouping of beads onto the wires. Like I mentioned before groupings of 3 work best but can be grouped more or less depending on pattern and bead sizes.

Separate the wire into opposite directions.

Take the wire from the right side and bring it between the top and bottom of the bobby pin to the opposite side and pull tight.

Now take the wire from the left side and bring it between the top and bottom of the bobby pin to the opposite side and pull tight.

DIY Beaded Bobby Pin - step 5

Bring both wire together above the pin. Add your next group of beads.

DIY Beaded Bobby Pin - step 6

Repeat the actions you did after the first grouping of beads. Separate the wire into opposite directions. Take the wire from the right side and bring it between the top and bottom of the bobby pin to the opposite side and pull tight. Now take the wire from the left side and bring it between the top and bottom of the bobby pin to the opposite side and pull tight. Bring both wires together above the pin. Add your next group of beads.

DIY Beaded Bobby Pin - step 7

Repeat until you have reached the end of your pin / pattern.

DIY Beaded Bobby Pin - step 8

Once you have reached the end, wrap the wire around the pin one more time.

DIY Beaded Bobby Pin - step 9

Very tightly wrap the 2 pieces of wire together.

DIY Beaded Bobby Pin - step 10

Using your wire cutter / nail clipper snip the wires close to the bobby pin but leaving enough wire so they don’t come unraveled. Bend down any sharp ends of the wire.

DIY Beaded Bobby Pin - step 11

Voila! You have your very own beaded bobby pin!
