When I was a kid I hated breakfast I basically never ate anything in the morning, as I developed into a teenager I matured a little I had a stable breakfast of Doritos and Diet Coke (what I would do to have that metabolism back, like seriously). As I grew up a little more I got a little better about breakfast, in college a big cup of coffee and a granola bar usually did the trick, improvements! Even in my first few years into adulthood breakfast was never my priority and then that all changed. A few years ago my now husband and I were preparing for our wedding we wanted to make sure we looked our best for the big day and to do that we knew we had to make a big change for our diet. We tried out the 21 Sugar Detox and from those 3 weeks my life was forever changed for the better. Since then if I don’t get a good solid breakfast you might as well just send me back to bed straight away because it will become a waste of a day. I learned a lot about how my body reacts to different kinds of foods especially sugar, I learned how to get my body full of real solid nutritional food. Even after the sugar detox we stayed in the paleo lifestyle for a long time. Then I got pregnant and my awful first trimester basically killed my eating habits, I was always sick I couldn’t keep anything down except saltines, ginger ale, and lemon heads no joke that is essentially all I ate my first trimester. Anyway back on track, breakfast, I can now admit as a fully functioning adult breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. And today I am sharing with you one of my favorites, Savory Oats!

I know oatmeal is generally thought of as a sweet breakfast and don’t get me wrong I love loading my oatmeal full of sweet blueberries but try savory oatmeal once and you will be wishing for it everyday. In my recipe the oats get cooked with soy sauce and sesame oil to get good flavor and is topped with onions, bacon, and an egg. This is a good hearty meal that will keep you full all morning!

Savory Oatmeal

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 25 minutes

Yield: 2 Servings


  • 4 strips bacon
  • 1 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1 3/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil, divided
  • 1/4 a medium yellow onion
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 green onions
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Optional: sriracha


  1. In a pan over medium heat fry the bacon 8-10 minutes flipping occasionally until preferred crispiness. Set bacon aside onto a paper towel to drain the grease. Drain bacon grease from pan. Set pan aside for the onions.
  2. In a saucepan add the water, soy sauce, and sesame oil, heat covered on high until boiling. Once boiling stir in the old fashioned oats, turn down to medium heat and cook uncovered for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes take off heat and cover, keep covered for 3-4 minutes for oatmeal to set.
  3. Dice onion. Over medium heat add 1 teaspoon of olive oil to pan, use spatula to gently loosen all of the brown bits from the bacon. Add onions and cook until tender 3-5 minutes. Once cooked set onions aside.
  4. Add second teaspoon of olive oil to pan. Once oil is hot fry the eggs covered 3 - 5 minutes until fully cooked.
  5. Separate oatmeal and onions into two bowls. Place one egg and 2 strips of bacon into each bowl. Cut one green onion into each bowl. Add sriracha if desired.
  6. Serve immediately.

  1. I made this for breakfast and it was amazing! Way better than the brown sugar oatmeal packet I usually heat up in the microwave. I had some mushrooms in my fridge that I added and they were a good addition. YUM!
