Viral Chopped Italian Sandwiches Recipe
This is one of those TikTok made me do it recipes. A recipe for a chopped Italian Sandwich went viral leading to all sorts of different versions. The most popular version of a chopped sandwich is this Italian Sandwich based off of the equally viral Italian Subs (or Grinder Sandwiches).
Now the first time this was made at our house my husband actually made it after watching a video on social media. Although it was good it missed a huge aspect in my opinion, the toasted sub roll and melted cheese. Without those two parts the sandwich just fell lackluster. So this version is actually a Better Than the Viral Chopped Italian Sandwich Recipe. I guess after all the beauty of this delicious sandwich is that you get to take simple ingredients and make it how you like it.
We are still chopping pretty much everything, everything except the cheese. The deli meats and veggies are still going to get chopped. And then made into a chopped salad for the filling. We are going to melt the cheese and toast the sub rolls after everything is chopped up for truly the best version of this sandwich. Which has now become a family favorite!
P.S. The Italian Grinder Salad filling is amazing on it’s own, if you are looking for just a salad version just skip the bread and it the salad.
Ingredients
- Banana Pepper Rings + Juices – Nice and tangy banana peppers are key to this sandwich and the flavors. If you can’t find Banana Peppers you could try using pepperoncini as a substitute.
- Red Onion – A zip from the red onions helps keep the sandwich balanced, you can reduce the amount if you have a family that isn’t too sure about red onion.
- Iceberg Lettuce – Iceberg is what helps make this recipe great, the crunch from the iceberg really helps make the filling great. You could also already use shredded lettuce to make it easier and in a pinch you could use any green leaf lettuce like romaine lettuce.
- Tomato – Make sure you slice the tomato before adding it to the pile of ingredients to make it easy to chop.
- Salami – You will want about 4 ounces or 1/4 pound from the deli.
- Pepperoni – Same as the salami you will want about 4 ounces or 1/4 pound from the deli or just grab a pack of pepperoni and use about half a pack.
- Turkey Breast – Sliced deli turkey breast, you will want about 6 ounces.
- Mayonnaise – Mayo for dressing the filling, some recipes you will see added the mayo as it was being chopped, I just found this to be messy and unnecessary so it is being added to everything once it is chopped.
- Red Wine Vinegar – For flavoring the filling, just a little goes a long way.
- Garlic Powder – For flavoring.
- Dried Oregano – For flavoring.
- Provolone Cheese – That melty cheese you are looking for, you could always use mozzarella cheese as a substitute.
- Sub Rolls or Hoagie Rolls – I like the rolls on the softer side that toast up nice. You can really use any kind of bread you want though, give a french bread or crusty sandwich rolls a try too.

Instructions
Preheat your oven to broil (High). Place the sub rolls on a baking sheet and evenly distribute the provolone cheese among them. Set aside momentarily.
On a spacious cutting board, arrange the banana peppers, red onion, iceberg lettuce, tomato slices, salami, pepperoni, and turkey.
With precision and a sharp knife, chop all the ingredients on the cutting board, initially in one direction and then in the opposite direction, ensuring an even, fine chop so everything is in small pieces. Utilize your knife to gather and reposition the ingredients as necessary.
Transfer the finely chopped mixture to a sizable mixing bowl. Add in the mayonnaise, red wine vinegar, garlic powder, oregano, and banana pepper juice. Mix thoroughly until all the ingredients are well combined, forming the delectable filling for your sandwiches.
Once prepared, place the baking sheet with the sub rolls in the oven and broil for 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the rolls are beautifully toasted and golden. Keep a vigilant eye to prevent any burning.
With caution, remove the rolls from the oven and generously spoon the flavorful filling mixture into each warm sub roll. Serve your Chopped Italian Sandwiches immediately.
tips, tricks and questions
Can I customize the ingredients in these sandwiches?
Absolutely! Feel free to tailor the ingredients to suit your preferences. Add or subtract any meats, cheeses, or veggies to create your perfect combination. You can also play around with the flavors try drizzling a bit of balsamic glaze, a drizzle of olive oil, a sprinkle of Italian Seasoning, or sprinkling crushed red pepper flakes or black pepper atop your sandwiches before serving.
How can I make these sandwiches ahead of time for a party or picnic?
You can prepare the filling mixture in advance and store it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to assemble the sandwiches. Assemble the sandwiches just before serving to ensure they remain fresh and delicious.
Can I substitute any of the meats or cheeses with alternatives?
Of course! Experiment with different meats and cheeses to cater to your taste preferences or dietary restrictions. Slices of ham, mortadella, roast beef, or even vegetarian options like grilled eggplant can make delightful substitutes.
How do I store any leftover sandwiches?
If you happen to have any leftovers (though they’re so delicious, they might disappear quickly!) keep the filling and bread separate if possible. Keep the filling in an airtight container. If they are already made in a sandwich wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store them in the refrigerator. Enjoy them within a day or two for the best taste and texture.

- 1 tablespoons banana pepper juice (from the jar of banana pepper rings)
- 1 tsp garlic powder

- Preheat oven to broil (High). Add the cut and open sob rolls to a baking sheet. Add the provolone evenly between the sandwiches. Set aside.

Delicious! Great move to toast the bread and melt the cheese. I was out of tomato, so used a jar of roasted red pepper instead, and added some kalamata olives. This will be on repeat! Thanks
