Ingredients for Halloween Monster Burgers
- Hamburger Patties – So you can really use any kind of burger you want here, I purposefully left it up to you. Use beef patties, chicken, or even veggie burger! You can even use ground beef to make your own burgers.
- Hamburger Buns – Use your favorite burger buns!
- Romaine Lettuce – You can really use any kind of lettuce here, adding that piece of lettuce adds a nice freshness to the burger.
- Dill Pickle Sandwich Slices – For the tongue, these are the long and thin pickle slices, I found the brand Claussen to have them readily available.
- Sliced White Cheddar Cheese – To create those monster cheese teeth. I use white cheddar but feel free to use other white cheeses like munster, swiss, provolone, or mozzarella.
- Ketchup – For that spooky blood effect!
- Green Olives – For the monster eyes, you could also use black olive if that is what your family prefers.
- Toothpicks – To attach the eyes to the burger bun, you can also use a cocktail stick if that is what you have on hand.
Instructions
Prepare the Monster Features:
Start by getting the cheese and olives ready. Use a small, sharp knife to cut triangles out of one side of each cheese slice into a zigzag pattern, creating jagged edges that look like teeth. For the eyes, stick a toothpick into each green olive.
Cook the Burger Patties:
Heat your grill or a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place the burger patties on the grill or skillet and cook for about 3 minutes on each side, until they reach your preferred level of doneness. If you want to toast the buns, set them on the grill for about 1 minute after the patties are done.
Assemble the Monster Burgers:
Lay a piece of romaine lettuce on the bottom half of each bun.
Place a burger patty on top of the lettuce.
Add a pickle slice over the patty, positioning it so that it sticks out like a monster tongue.
Place the cheese slice with teeth on top of the pickle, letting the jagged edge hang over the side.
Spread a little ketchup on top of the cheese for a “bloody” effect.
Add the top bun, then push the toothpicked olives into the top bun as eyes.
Serve and Enjoy:
Repeat the assembly for all four burgers. Your Halloween Monster Burgers are now ready to be served. Watch the excitement as your family or guests discover the spooky surprise on their plates!
tips, tricks and questions
Make Ahead:
If you’re prepping for a party, you can cut the cheese and prep the olive eyes ahead of time. This will make assembly a breeze when you’re ready to serve.
Can I use different types of cheese?
Yes, as long as it’s sliced cheese, it should work.
Can I make these burgers vegetarian or vegan?
Yes, you can easily adapt this recipe! You can use store bought plant-based burger patties or try making them with my Black Bean Burgers. You can also use vegan cheese slices for a vegan-friendly version. It’ll be just as tasty and just as spooky.
How can I make the burgers spicier?
If you want to add some heat, try using pepper jack cheese or layering on some sliced jalapeños. You could also mix hot sauce into the ketchup for an extra fiery “blood” effect.
What other toppings can I add?
Feel free to get creative with your toppings! Add bacon strips for a monster with a “beard,” or use avocado slices for some green “slime.” You could even experiment with different types of pickles to give your monster a unique look. Feel free to also add mayo or mustard to the buns for extra flavor!
