Farm Raised vs. Wild Caught Salmon
Let’s look at the differences between farm-raised and wild-caught salmon. Farm-raised salmon is cultivated in controlled environments, providing a consistent taste and texture. Farm raised salon often is higher in fat and lighter in color. This On the other hand, wild-caught salmon comes from its natural habitat, offering a richer flavor profile. Wild caught salmon is often brighter in color and will often contain more minerals like higher levels or calcium and iron. There is usually a difference in price as well. Either works for this recipe, choose what works for your family.
Ingredients
- Salmon – You can use fresh salmon or previously frozen salmon. I prefer buying a 1-pound salmon fillet for convenience. Alternatively, you can use smaller salmon filets, to equal 1 pound. You will want to peel the salmon skin off, if you don’t like the idea of doing this yourself some grocery stores will take it off for you when you are getting your fish from the counter.
- Spices – garlic powder, paprika, kosher salt, chili powder, onion powder
- Oil – I like to use refined coconut oil for my fish but you can also use olive oil, avocado oil, canola oil, or vegetable oil.
- Honey – The star of the dish, the recipe calls from plain honey but if you are looking for a spicy version trying using all or part hot honey!
- Apple Cider Vinegar – The vinegar help balance out the sweetness and thickness of the honey.
- Garlic – Fresh garlic minced is going to yield the best results.
- Sriracha – To balance out the honey, the amount written you won’t find any heat in the dish, if you want a little more heat add more sriracha. If you have trouble finding sriracha any hot sauce will do.

Instructions
Craft the Spice Blend
In a small bowl, combine garlic powder, paprika, kosher salt, chili powder, and onion powder. Set this flavorful blend aside for later use.
Mix the Honey Sauce
In a bowl or measuring cup, mix together honey, apple cider vinegar, minced garlic, and sriracha. This combination creates a luscious and tangy sauce that will elevate your salmon bites.
Prepare the Salmon
On a cutting board, carefully peel the skin off the salmon. Use a sharp knife if necessary. Discard the skin and cut the salmon into 1-inch cubes.
Coat Salmon with Spice Blend
Add the cut salmon cubes to a mixing bowl and sprinkle the prepared spice blend over it. Toss gently to ensure every piece is perfectly coated.
Cook the Salmon
Heat a large skillet (preferably a 12-inch cast iron) over medium high heat. Once you have a hot pan add the oil to the skillet. Cook the salmon pieces in a single layer, spreading them out. Cook for 1 minute, then flip the salmon.
Glaze with Honey Sauce
Add the honey garlic sauce to the skillet and cook for an additional 1 minute. Gently move the salmon around, ensuring they are coated in the delectable sauce. Cook for an additional 60 to 90 seconds, creating a beautiful glaze. Remove from heat.
Rest Before Serving
Allow the skillet to sit for 2-3 minutes before serving the honey garlic salmon bites. This resting period enhances the flavors and thickens the sauce. If you are wanting to garnish the dish add sesame seeds or sliced green onions.
tips, tricks and questions
Can I use smaller portions of salmon?
Absolutely! You can easily half the recipe and use 8 ounces of salmon to make a smaller portion.
Are there alternative cooking methods for this delightful dish?
You can try grilling, cooking in the oven, or using the air fryer to cook the salmon. If you do any of these ways you will want to cook the salmon until done. Meanwhile add the honey sauce to a small sauce pan and cook on medium-high for about 3 minutes before removing from the heat and gently tossing the cooked salmon into the honey glaze.
What to eat with salmon?
This salmon is great on it’s own but is really good with jasmine rice, in a rice bowl the rice soaks up the sauce and it is so good! You could also serve it with another grain like brown rice or quinoa. Make it into a complete meal by making a salmon bowl by including a veggie like broccoli or sweet potato fries with the salmon and rice. We also had this once in lettuce wraps and it was a delicious way to serve it.
Adjust the Spice Level
As written the teaspoon of sriracha doesn’t give the dish any heat, it just balances out the sweet honey. If you are wanting to add a little heat the best way would be adding extra sauce like more sriracha or adding a few pinches or red pepper flakes. Alternatively you could also use hot honey in place of the honey.
