Ingredients
- Whole Milk – Or any kind of milk you would like, it can be a dairy free option.
- Pumpkin Puree – Make sure this is 100% pumpkin puree and not the canned pumpkin pie filling.
- Pumpkin Spice – You can use store bought or my homemade pumpkin pie spice.
- Brown Sugar – I like the flavor of the brown sugar with the pumpkin, it gives the caramel vibes that goes perfect with a fall flavored hot chocolate.
- Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips – Feel free to use other kinds of chocolate, I find that semi sweet is very good as well as dark chocolate. Milk chocolate got a little too sweet, if you want to use milk chocolate I recommended leaving out the sugar and only adding any sugar back in after tasting it to see if it needs it. You can also use white chocolate for a beautiful orange colored hot chocolate.
- Vanilla Extract – This gives the hot chocolate just a little kick of extra flavor.
- For Serving – Use marshmallows or whipped cream, or both! You can also use a cinnamon stick for garnish.
Instructions
Add the milk, pumpkin puree, pumpkin spice, and brown sugar to a small saucepan. Heat on medium heat whisking occasionally to make sure everything comes together.
Once the milk is hot and steaming but not yet simmering add in the chocolate. Whisk well as the chocolate melts to incorporate the chocolate into the milk mixture. Once the chocolate is all melted and whisk in the vanilla extract.
Remove from heat and transfer to mugs. Top with whipped cream or marshmallows, and a sprinkle of pumpkin spice.
tips, tricks and questions
Can I use a non dairy milk like almond milk or oat milk?
Absolutely! Feel free to use the kind of milk that works best for you.
Is it okay to use dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or white chocolate?
Yes! Feel free to use the type of chocolate that you enjoy best. I will note if you are using milk chocolate or white chocolate I would leave out the brown sugar while making it, taste test it after adding the chocolate and then see if you want to add sugar in because this is a very rich hot chocolate and it might be too sweet for some with both a sugary chocolate and brown sugar.
Can this be made ahead and reheated?
Yes! It can be made ahead and reheated in a microwave or on the stovetop. This can also be made ahead and kept warm in a crockpot for a party.
Can I spike this Pumpkin Hot Chocolate with alcohol?
Yes, feel free to add a shot or bourbon or whiskey to the hot beverage.
