What Snack Box Container is Right for You?
While different kinds of snack containers have been around forever social media launched a new frenzy of snack containers with the discovery of the snackle box.
The original idea of the snackle box was taking an actual fishing tackle box and using it for snacks. A quite simple idea led to making of several versions of snackle boxes that went far beyond a clean fishing tackle box.
So with so many options of snackle boxes I wanted to figure out which one is best. After doing a little digging between pinterest and amazon I narrowed it down to three styles of snack tackle boxes that I wanted to test out.
While picking these out there were a few things I wanted to keep in mind but the biggest thing I was making sure that I chose food-grade plastic. When looking at people using these boxes online I often wondered if the tackle boxes they were using, which were originally intended for fishing tackle were indeed food safe. This especially is important to pay attention to when you are looking into actual tackle boxes to use opposed to ones marketed for snacks. According to toxicfreefuture.org the three safest types of plastic to use for food storage are #2, #4, and #5. I recommend looking at the packaging or sellers page before buying to see what kind of plastic your product is made from. As of the publish date of this article all the links I share are made with one of these food grade plastics.
Some other qualities I looked at were ease of use, storage capacity, ease of cleaning, and what my kids preferred.
Types of Snackle Boxes
These are the three different style that I found most often used online.
- The original ‘snackle box’, this is essentially a food safe version of the snack tackle boxes that originally took social media by storm. These are the usually see-through plastic containers that are rectangle shaped and have small compartments with adjustable dividers inside. I will be calling this version Original Snackle Box throughout the post.
- A traditional fishing tackle box made with food grade plastic. This is the biggest option, with a bottom and top piece of plastic that when opened in the middle has a trays that open up into layers. I will be calling this one Tackle Box for Snacks during this post.
- The last one is a more modern take, that could best be described as a mixture between the two. This version had become very popular online. It has a plastic base with larger compartments that you can take in and out, and a top that latches to the bottom that can come off completely. I will be calling this one Snack Box Container.
Each of these different snack boxes have there different uses so let’s deep dive into them below.
1. The Original Snackle Box
Pros: Overall this is a great container. When purchasing there are two sizes for choose from a regular size and a large size, I bought the large version. I could see how buying each of your kid’s a regular size version so they each have their own would also be a good play. The large version was larger in size than a typical plastic tackle box. This box you are able to change the sizes of the spots inside the container, just like an actual tackle box. It does come with extra dividers so you can make spots smaller or larger depending on what you are putting in it.
There are a few good reasons to buy this version opposed to just buying a regular tackle box; this is made from #5 plastic, it says so on the packaging making it food grade and BPA free, it also has edging around the outside of the lid making it so it is an airtight container, and it does come with some accessories like a tongs, dip container, and bag fastener.
The size of the spots inside the container could be a pro or con depending on the age of who is using the box. If you have kids that are younger, especially toddler and early elementary I would give this box a PRO rating due to the fact it is easier for little hands to get in there and get the snacks out. As an adult I found the spots difficult to get things out of due to the size of my hands. I am not saying it was impossible or even hard I just think that the smaller hands would prefer this box.
Lastly this box is listed as dishwasher safe, although it was so awkward I just ended up hand washing it.
Cons: Like I just mentioned above if you are looking for a snack box for a teenager or adult I would pass on this one, just because of the size of the compartments, compared to the other options that has the space for larger hands.
Cost, this really depends on your budget but the cost would be a con for me. When I bought this one it was $24.99 which isn’t the end of the world if you plan on using it over and over but it was the most expensive one I purchased.
2. Snack Tackle Box
Pros: It is a real tackle box. This option is just plain impressive because it has the layers that open up. This is a great option if you are looking for something a little bit bigger or for the aesthetics of the box. This is great for holding larger amounts of food opposed to just snacks.
This one did take some research as it doesn’t have what type of plastic it is on the sellers page but upon arrival at my house I was happy to see it is marked with #5 plastic on the bottom.
The price of this tackle box for snacks came in at just under $20. Making it the middle option of prices.
Cons: It is big and a weird size if you need to keep it cool. It also stores the food a little different than the other two options (which could be a pro or con). The big bottom has a lot of place for the storage of large snacks and the smaller spot up top aren’t huge.
Since it isn’t marketed for a snack box I am guessing it isn’t dishwasher safe but I also have a feeling it wouldn’t really fit in a dishwasher anyway.
Ultimately this is the snackle box I would pass on. It doesn’t hold as many snacks as the others and it is an awkward size.
3. Snack Box Container
Pros: I must admit right away that this was my favorite option and the one that I would always grab for first. I am even considering buying a second one so that each of my children can have there own for long car trips.
I like how there are containers inside the container itself and that these could be removed to be cleaned or passed around. These containers also are a great size, they are big enough to hold good amount of food without being too big, for example they held a cut up large apple great. They also fit little sandwiches made with finger rolls (more info on that in my snackle box ideas post). The outside container was also sturdy and the latches stayed shut well, it also has bonus point for having handles.
This was also the best price and if you aren’t completely smitten with this exact version there are a ton of other ones just like it for around the same price. This one cost me $16.99 at the time I bought it.
Lastly I think this one is just prettier than the others, it also comes in different colors!
Cons: For this model in particular only the inside containers are dishwasher safe and the outside container isn’t. There are more on the market that might be fully dishwasher proof if you shop around. This personally wan’t a huge deal for me but it might be for you.
So what is the best snackle box container?
If I had to choose which is the winner I would choose option number 3, the Snack Box Container. I found myself using this one the most out of the different styles I tried. The spaces inside the container was the perfect size for snacks. Even though it wasn’t fully dishwasher safe I found due to the size of it it was easy to hand wash. It also comes in at the best price point! I liked it so much I am planning on buying a second for my family to use.
I will add as a caveat if you have toddlers you might prefer option number one the original snackle box as it is better suited for smaller snacks and smaller hands.
If you are looking for something to truly impress than option number two the tackle box for snacks will be your best options.
