Homemade Simple Guacamole
Nothing is better a side of guac right?! I think it actually makes everything better!
The best part is as long as you have ripe avocados at home it couldn’t be easier to make!
Guacamole is a simple thing to make, with only a handful of ingredients. In this super simple version I just use minced red onion, cilantro, lime juice, and salt to flavor the avocados.
And of course if you want to throw in other add-ins that isn’t a problem.
I find myself making this guac ALL THE TIME. I mean almost every time I make Black Bean Nachos, Easy Chicken Tacos, or my Slow Cooker Barbacoa.
Plus nothing screams happy hour more than this easy guacamole with my fresh restaurant style salsa, and a margarita!? Match made in heaven!
And the best part no special equipment just a bowl, knife, and fork!
ingredients
- Avocados – The obvious avocado in guacamole. The hardest part about making this recipe is waiting for your avocado to be at the perfect ripeness! I like to joke that you can blink and they go from hard to rotten.
- Red Onion – I think the zip of red onion but you can use a white or yellow onion if that is what you have. You will want the little bit of onion diced pretty small so that it can disperse throughout the dish well enough.
- Cilantro – A staple of guacamole so hopefully you aren’t one of those who can’t stand the taste. A little does go a long way here.
- Lime – Fresh squeezed lime juice is the only way for guacamole so skip the bottled stuff! One medium sized lime usually produces about 2 tablespoons of juice.
- Salt – Kosher Salt or Sea Salt for this guacamole! If you are looking to use table salt you will want to half the amount.

pro tip
To speed the process of avocados ripening you can place the avocados in a paper bag along with an apple or banana. This will help speed up the process (although it won’t be instant). If you are looking to slow down the ripening process transfer your avocados to the refrigerator, this will help them not go bad as quickly.
instructions
Peel and add avocados to a bowl. Use a fork to smash them down to a smooth consistency leaving as many chunks as you prefer.
Squeeze the lime juice overtop the avocados. Add the red onion, cilantro, and salt to the bowl. Mix everything together well. Serve immediately.
tips, tricks and questions
Can this keep in the fridge overnight?
If you are storing any extras place in a container/bowl and use plastic cling wrap to cover it. Have the cling wrap cover the surface of the guacamole so the guacamole isn’t exposed to any extra air, this will help it stay green longer. Will keep about 1 to 2 nights in the fridge.
Feel free to use other add-ins. A little bit of diced tomato, jalapeño, or garlic would be delicious!
What is traditional guacamole made of?
Traditionally guacamole can contain avocados, onion, tomatoes, cilantro, jalapeños, lime juice, garlic and salt. So feel free to add anymore of these if you want them.
