Italian Pulled Pork Sandwiches (Great for Leftover Pulled Pork)
When you are ready to switch up your normal pulled pork sandwich recipe this is the sandwich for you. Loosely based off a sandwich I had while visiting the Minnesota State Fair this is a loose take on an Italian Pulled Pork Sandwich.
I would say this is sandwich is somewhere between pulled pork and a cuban sandwich. It’s got pulled pork, ham, pickled veggies, and cheese. It is simple to make and can be made with freshly made pulled pork or absolutely perfect recipe for leftover pulled pork.
I use my Crockpot Pulled Pork recipe but you could easily use your favorite recipe or you could even make this with leftover Crockpot Carnitas or Crockpot Mojo Pork as well, of course keeping in mind that the flavor profile will be slightly different.

Ingredients
With only five main ingredients, this recipe is as simple as it is delicious. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Deli Ham – Thinly sliced for easy layering. You can use whatever flavor of deli ham works best for you, I like black forest ham but you could also use honey ham for a bit more sweetness.
- Pulled Pork – Use leftover pulled pork or grab some pre-made from your local deli.
- Jarred Giardiniera – This Italian relish of pickled vegetables adds a tangy, spicy kick. Giardiniera comes in mild and spicy varieties. Choose one based on your heat preference. You can find it in the pickle aisle of most grocery stores.
- Provolone Cheese – Melts beautifully to bring all the flavors together. You can use sharp provolone cheese or smoked provolone to make any flavor adjustments you’d like.
- Ciabatta Rolls – Sturdy and crusty, perfect for holding the hearty filling.

Instructions
Preheat the oven to 400ºF.
Prepare the giardiniera: Drain the jarred giardiniera and chop it slightly on a cutting board so it fits better in the sandwich.
Assemble the sandwiches:
Slice the ciabatta rolls open.
Add about ½ cup pulled pork on the bottom half of each roll.
Add the ham on top of the pulled pork.
Evenly distribute the chopped giardiniera over the ham.
Top with sliced provolone cheese.
Bake: Place the open sandwiches (with the top rolls on the side) on a sheet pan. Transfer to the oven and bake for 7-10 minutes, or until the bread is crispy and the cheese is melted.
Serve: Remove from the oven, assemble the sandwiches, and enjoy immediately.

tips, tricks and questions
What’s giardiniera?
Giardiniera is an Italian relish made of pickled vegetables such as cauliflower, carrots, and peppers. It’s often marinated in oil or vinegar and adds a tangy, slightly spicy flavor to dishes.
Can I use a different type of bread?
Absolutely! Any sturdy bread that can hold up to the hearty filling will work well. Options like baguettes, sourdough, or even pretzel rolls make great alternatives.
Can I make these ahead of time?
The sandwiches are best served fresh, but you can prep the components (chop giardiniera, slice rolls) ahead of time for faster assembly.
How can I reheat leftovers?
Reheat leftover sandwiches in the oven at 350ºF for 5-7 minutes. This will keep the bread crispy and the cheese melted.
Serving Suggestions
Pair these sandwiches with a crisp green salad, a bowl of soup, or a side of potato chips to round out the meal.
