Homemade Tartar Sauce with Greek Yogurt
When the seafood dishes comes out for dinner you need a good solid tartar sauce recipe. And while classic tartar sauce is always so delicious this healthy tartar sauce recipe is amazingly good and perfect for any fish.
The yogurt gives the sauce an almost airy and light quality without sacrificing the flavor of traditional tartar sauce. Perfect with so many dishes like fish sticks, salmon patties, fried shrimp, and secretly one of my favorite pairings tartar sauce with french fries!
Ingredients
- Greek Yogurt – Gives it a creamy texture with a slight tang perfect for tartar sauce. You can use full-fat or low-fat! You can also use plain yogurt to make this recipe.
- Mayo – Mayonnaise is used in the classic version of Tartar Sauce. Here we are using just enough to add richness and give the right flavor to the sauce. It can be omitted for a fully yogurt-based version but adding some really gives it the flavor you want.
- Chopped Dill Pickles – Provides that needed crunch and a classic tartar sauce flavor. You can swap for sweet pickle relish if you would like, this will make the sauce a little sweeter than using dill pickles.
- Dijon Mustard – Enhances the tangy flavor. Can use yellow mustard for a milder taste.
- Lemon Juice – A must for tartar sauce it gives the sauce its bright flavors that go so well with fish. Fresh lemon juice is best, avoid using bottled lemon juice if possible.
- Optional: Fresh Garlic – Adds depth if you choose to use it. My family including my kids prefers it without the garlic as it definitely gives off a little bit of a bite to the sauce. You could also substitute just a pinch of garlic powder for a milder touch or leave it out completely.
Instructions
In a small bowl, add the greek yogurt, mayo, chopped pickles, dijon mustard, lemon juice, and garlic (if using).
Whisk together until smooth.
Taste and adjust seasoning as needed, if it fills too thick add a bit more lemon juice or a splash of water. A lot of greek yogurt brands will have slightly different consistencies.
For a smoother consistency, blend everything in a food processor.
Serve immediately or store in the fridge until ready to use.
