Easy Chopped BLT Sandwich
After my family fell in love with my Italian Chopped Sandwiches I just knew that I had to try another chopped sandwich. A BLT seemed like the right one to try next, I just didn’t know I was going to like it so much, and I mean I might like it better that the classic BLT… All of the flavors come together so perfectly for each bite I am so obsessed with it.
The best part is that it isn’t any more difficult than a classic BLT, still the easy sandwich that we all appreciate and love.
ingredients
- Bacon – A pack of bacon usually weighs between 12 and 16 ounces so you will want a whole package of bacon. I try to avoid any of the bacon that has the maple syrup flavor and I try to pick one that is thicker cut. I prefer regular bacon but you can use turkey bacon.
- Heart of Romaine – One of the hearts of romaine that come in the three pack is what I use, you can of course use other kinds of lettuce like iceberg lettuce or something fancier like arugula.
- Fresh Tomato – Like a regular BLT a good solid fresh tomato is still key for the best tasting sandwich. Choose one large tomato or choose 2 smaller ones.
- Mayonnaise – Of course mayo just like the classic sandwich, you can definitely play around with how much you like on the filling. Start with about two tablespoons and add more as needed.
- Sub Rolls – Using a sub roll is great because it holds in the chopped filling, I also tired this with a fresh demi-loaf and treated it like a roll and it was delicious.
pro tip
This works as a great Blackstone Grill recipe. That is what I have been using to make this and it makes the whole process so simple.
instructions
Begin by cooking the bacon. This can be done two different ways either on a skillet/flattop or in the oven.
Stovetop in a Skillet/Flattop (Blackstone) Grill
For cooking on the stovetop in a large skillet or on a flattop grill. Lay our the bacon on a cold skillet, turn the heat to medium. Cook the bacon flipping every 3 or 4 minutes until the bacon is browned and crispy to your liking. Transfer the bacon to a paper towel lined plate to drain and cool slightly.
Oven
For cooking in the oven. Line a sheet pan with aluminum foil. Place the bacon on the foil-covered sheet pan and place in the cold oven. Turn the oven to 425º F cook about 15 minutes or to you liking.
While the bacon is cooking chop the romaine lettuce and dice the tomato(es) on a cutting board and add to a large bowl. Add the mayo starting with 2 tablespoons, toss and mix everything together to coat the mayo. Give a quick taste and decide if you want to add more mayo or not.
Once the bacon is done cooking you can toast the buns using either the skillet or the oven.
For the large skillet carefully empty the skillet of the bacon grease, once most of the bacon grease is gone open the sub roll and place cut side down onto the skillet to toast 2 to 3 minutes, repeat with each sub roll (For a flattop grill simply scrape away the extra grease and place all the rolls down at once).
For the oven turn the heat to broil (high). Add the sub rolls to a sheet pan with the cut side open faced up. Transfer under the broiler and toast 1 to 3 minutes, keeping an eye on the sub rolls so they don’t burn.
Chop the bacon into pieces and transfer the chopped bacon to the chopped salad. Toss everything together. Transfer the chopped BLT salad into each of the toasted sub rolls. Serve immediately.
tips, tricks and questions
How to jazz up a BLT?
Ready to add more than just crispy bacon, lettuce, and tomato? Try adding some hot sauce with the mayo for a spicy kick. You can also add chopped avocado, cherry tomatoes, feta cheese, or pickled onion.
What are the best tomatoes for BLT sandwiches?
Because this is a chopped version of the sandwich I think really anything goes… a nice heirloom tomato, roma tomatoes, or even cherry tomatoes will work for this sandwich.
What goes with BLT sandwiches?
I like serving these sandwiches with fries like my Sweet Potato Wedges or Rosemary Parm Baked Potato Wedges, you could even serve them with a side of chips or a nice side of veggies and Hummus would be a good option too.
