Blueberry Ice Cream Recipe
Today, I’m excited to share a delightful recipe for homemade blueberry ice cream that will transport your taste buds to a summery paradise. With the help of an ice cream machine, you can create a creamy and refreshing frozen treat that showcases the vibrant flavors of fresh summer blueberries.
Where I live in northern New England wild blueberries are EVERYWHERE during the middle and end of July. For example I just found another random wild blueberry bush on the side of our property I didn’t know about, they just pop up everywhere.
Most often around here you take a mountain or lakeside hike and there are more wild blueberries than you could possibly ever pick or eat. It is incredible and I guarantee that the family and I take full advantage.
(Now if you want to go full New England you will make a Whoopie Pie to go with your blueberry ice cream.)
So after have a fridge actually full to the brim of all sorts of containers of blueberries this delicious homemade blueberry ice cream was developed.
If you really have as many blueberries as me try making Blueberry Pie too!
Really nothing is better than a bowl of ice cream on a warm summer’s evening! So grab your ice cream maker and let’s make some ice cream!
No ice cream maker? Try making this Marshmallow Ice Cream instead, equally as good of a summer flavor without the special equipment!

pro tip
I find it best to make the blueberry mixture well before you plan on making the ice cream to ensure that it has plenty of time to chill. I would even recommend making it the day before if you have the time.
instructions
Add the sugar and blueberries to a small saucepan and heat to medium on the stovetop. Stirring the blueberries occasionally the sugar will start to liquify and blueberries will start to pop. Cook over medium heat stirring occasionally and gently pop the blueberries if needed until jammy about 15 minutes on medium. Cool the blueberry mixture to room temperature and the transfer to the fridge until the mixture is cold all the way through.

Mix blueberry mixture with remaining ingredients.
Add the blueberry ice cream base mixture to an ice cream maker and follow the ice cream makers instructions for length of time, mine takes 40 minutes.

Transfer the soft ice cream to a freeze proof container with a lid and transfer to the freezer for 3-4 hours before serving.
tips, tricks and questions
Do you have to use an ice cream maker for this recipe?
Yes, this recipe requires an ice cream maker. Each ice cream maker is a little different so look at your ice cream makers instruction manual for how long the ice cream should churn for.
When storing the ice cream make sure it is covered well to keep it from getting icy. If you make ice cream at home often enough I highly recommend grabbing these 1 quart ice cream containers. I have one and I use it all the time!

Made this last night and my hubs LOVED it. I used 2/3c of sugar as he loves a little maple syrup and plain yogurt on top 🤣
I usually make Lavender Blueberry popsicles with greek yogurt and honey because we have our own bees and grow our own culinary lavender and blueberries. But I wanted to try making an ice cream and hadn’t found a good recipe! Found yours and decided to make a few changes so I could incorporate the lavender and it turned out DELICIOUS! I infused the lavender in the 1.5 C of whole milk overnight. To be fair, I have difficulty with textures and don’t like pieces of fruit in my ice cream (I know, I know, kind of silly). So I strained the blueberry mixture to get the chunks out and then put it in the fridge to get cold overnight. The next day I combined the ingredients (minus the lemon but only because I forgot to add it). Added it all to my ice cream maker and it turned out SO GOOD. So all that to say, I didn’t follow your recipe to a T because we are a bit goofy over here but it still turned out delicious and was super helpful at helping me decide how to make my own version. THANK YOU!
Made this ice cream and it is hands down the best ice cream I have ever made or for that matter eaten. The only changes I made: a little less sugar (hubs is diabetic), no lemon (did not have it), and I added cream cheese (8oz) had softened and added vanilla to the cream cheese with about a tablespoon of sugar.
Yummy
Can I use blueberries that I have frozen?
